The Antonio Salemme Foundation was established by Antonio and Martha Salemme in the early 1980s, as a first step toward the goal of creating a museum for the artist's work. The museum concept proved unrealistic financially, however, and for several years after Salemme's death the role of the Foundation was limited to cataloging the art, managing the archives, and making donations of sculpture, paintings and drawings to several art institutions. Martha Salemme was president of the Foundation and performed most of this work until shortly before her death in December, 2004.
Martha Salemme willed her entire estate to the Foundation, and with proceeds from the sale of real estate the directors of the Foundation were able to secure storage and exhibition space for the collection in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Now, with a larger gallery at 542 Hamilton Street, in the Allentown Arts District, we are able to fulfill, at least partially, Antonio's wish to keep a core sample of his artistic legacy together and accessible to the public.
